One Book, One UIS Criteria

Overview and Selection Criteria

The One Book, One UIS program grew out of an appearance in 2011 by best-selling author Rebecca Skloot. Based on the interest both on campus and in the Springfield community for Skloot’s book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and for its author (Skloot’s appearance filled a 2,000 seat auditorium and the book signing lasted for over an hour), the chancellor asked the dean of the Brookens Library to try to formalize a community reading program for the campus. The result was One Book, One UIS.

Criteria for selection of one book nominees are based on the campus promise to students, expressed in the phrase “Leadership Lived” http://www.uis.edu/brand/ and on the criteria for the ECCE Speakers Series http://www.uis.edu/generaleducation/curriculum/ecce/ . The criteria state that the selected book must:

  • Address at least one ECCE learning outcome
  • Tie into Leadership Lived promises
  • Tie into UIS mission (which mirrors Leadership Lived promises)
  • Be accessible to a wide and diverse audience
  • Address the public sphere – focus on public good and not self-advancement – must have social, political and / or cultural connotations
  • Be relevant to UIS community and Springfield community.
