We are pleased to announce that the One Book, One UIS Committee has chosen Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy, by Cathy O’Neil as the selection for the 2017/2018 One Book, One UIS campus read. The final short-list of considered titles was diverse, presenting the committee with the challenge of choosing just one author to bring to campus. Weapons of Math Destruction rose to the top of the list, for several reasons, including the book’s ability to draw in various departments and units throughout campus, as well as it’s ability to reach a broad audience in the Springfield community.
As the title suggests, Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy, tackles a wide array of issues surrounding “big data”, a topic that has become a mainstay in media, as well as in the political landscape. We hope you are as excited as we are about the latest One Book selection.
The Keynote Lecture by Cathy O’Neil is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27, 2018 and will take place in the UIS Brookens Auditorium. The lecture and discussion begins at 7:00 pm with a book signing immediately following. We hope to see you there!
